Nyala North Locality is located in South Darfur State, western Sudan. It covers the northern part of Nyala city and its surrounding rural areas. It is one of the most important localities in the state due to Nyala’s role as a major administrative and economic center in Darfur. Nyala North hosts a large resident and displaced population. Nyala is one of the largest urban centers in Darfur, with hundreds of thousands of inhabitants, and the population has significantly increased due to repeated waves of displacement caused by conflict. Nyala North hosts several major IDP camps in the Darfur region, including: Kalma IDP Camp – One of the largest displacement camps in Sudan, hosting hundreds of thousands of IDPs. Otash IDP Camp – A major displacement site located near Nyala. Dereig IDP Camp – Located around Nyala and hosting thousands of displaced people. Since the outbreak of the Sudan conflict in April 2023, Nyala North has witnessed the establishment of numerous collective shelters in schools, government buildings, and public facilities to accommodate newly displaced people. The number of these centers changes continuously depending on displacement trends and humanitarian conditions. Nyala North Locality is a key humanitarian hub in South Darfur, hosting large numbers of internally displaced people. Numerous national and international organizations operate in the locality, providing health, WASH, protection, food security, and education services.
